Circadian office lighting — cool 6500K by morning, warm 2700K by evening (2016)

CBRE's Amsterdam headquarters replaced static fluorescent lighting with a daily sequence tuned to the circadian system: bright, blue-heavy light through the morning, then warmer and dimmer toward the end of the day to avoid suppressing evening melatonin. Researchers from the University of Twente and VU Amsterdam tracked 124 employees over seven months. Objective task accuracy rose 12% and self-rated productivity 10%, with most staff also reporting better energy and mood.

Why it matters: Your light schedule sets your biological clock. Bright mornings and dim evenings are a performance input, not décor.

Read it as: Real-world study over seven months, but one site and a moderate sample (124 people). Needs replication in other industries to generalize.

Texas A&M call center

Robust

+46% call resolution over six months

Stand-capable, height-adjustable desks for one of two matched groups (2016)

The Texas A&M School of Public Health followed 167 call-center staff on sit-stand desks against 167 on fixed seated desks for six months, measuring calls successfully resolved per hour. The standing group sat about 1.6 hours less per day. Their productivity edge was 23% in month one and climbed to 53% by month six as standing became habitual — a 46% average. Roughly three-quarters of the standing group also reported less bodily discomfort.

Why it matters: Sitting still is a drag on the prefrontal cortex. Breaking up the day with standing and movement frees the bandwidth back up — and the gain compounds as the habit sets.

Read it as: Peer-reviewed, six-month, parallel control group, objective output metric. Call-center work is highly structured — the exact multiplier may differ for loosely structured knowledge work.

Asana

Directional

+35% productivity from one meeting-free day

“No-Meeting Wednesdays” — one company-wide day with no internal meetings (2013)

Asana's CEO banned internal meetings on Wednesdays to give engineers and product teams a reliable block for deep work, protecting them from the recovery cost of switching back to a task after an interruption. Asana reports its own gains from the policy but has not published a controlled measurement. An independent survey of 76 companies that adopted no-meeting days found a single protected day per week was linked to a 35% rise in self-reported productivity, alongside lower stress and less micromanagement.

Why it matters: High output is not more hours — it is fewer interruptions. One defended block a week is worth more than the meetings it displaces.

Read it as: Asana's own figure is internal and unverified, so the headline here is the independent 76-company study instead — which relies on self-reported productivity, not objective output.

Atos

Directional

−60% internal email in three years

“Zero Email” — internal email replaced with threaded, asynchronous collaboration tools (2011)

Atos's CEO set out to eliminate internal email after finding staff spent a large share of the working day sorting cluttered inboxes. Internal communication moved to project-threaded social software. By the end of 2013 internal email volume had fallen roughly 60% — from about 100 messages per inbox per week to under 40. The company also claimed a productivity gain, but that figure was an estimate of reclaimed sorting time, not a measured output.

Why it matters: Reactive channels tax attention all day. Moving low-urgency traffic to asynchronous, organized threads is a direct cut to cognitive load.

Read it as: The 60% email reduction is a documented administrative fact. The often-quoted productivity boost is a company estimate, not a controlled result, so it is left out.

Lockheed Martin

Historical

Building 157, Sunnyvale — daylighting design: light shelves, high-performance glazing, open plan (1983)

Lockheed built its Sunnyvale engineering facility to pull natural daylight deep into the floor plate, aligning the workspace with the daily light-dark cycle. Absenteeism fell about 15% and the building saved roughly $500,000 in energy in its first year. Leadership credited the improved environment, along with the productivity it reported, as a factor in winning a major defense contract.

Why it matters: Daylight exposure is a biological signal, not an amenity. A workspace with real daylight keeps the clock aligned and people in their seats.

Read it as: A 1983 building with no control group. The absenteeism and energy figures are well documented; the productivity and contract claims are retrospective corporate accounts and can't be separated from the effect of a brand-new facility.

Mayo Clinic Cardiovascular Health Clinic

Solid

Wait times cut 91% — 33 days to 3

Lean redesign of appointment and clinic workflow — nurse-led triage, standardized care paths, pull scheduling (2005)

Facing a 30% no-show rate and scheduling bottlenecks, the clinic's Lean team stripped the patient journey from 16 steps to 6, moved intake to nurse-led triage, and scheduled against actual physician availability. Wait time from request to consultation fell from 33 days to 3. Physician schedule fill rose from 70% to 92%, and first-time quality — cases handled correctly with no rework — rose from 5% to 65%.

Why it matters: Most friction is redundant steps nobody removed. Systematize the repeatable parts of your day and your attention goes where it counts.

Read it as: Objective administrative records, not self-assessment. These are team-level clinical operations — an individual applies the principles (standardize, remove steps, schedule to capacity) to their own calendar rather than expecting the same automation.
