What the research shows
Unfinished work keeps running in the background. In Masicampo and Baumeister's experiments, an incomplete goal intruded on unrelated reading, made goal-related words easier to recall, and hurt performance on an unrelated puzzle. Having participants write a specific plan for the unfinished task — what, when, where — removed those effects. Writing the plan, not doing the task, was enough.

Contested — The plan-making and ego-depletion literature this belongs to has had mixed replication. Treat it as a useful working model, not a settled law.
Mechanism
Why it works this way
When you move from one task to another, part of your processing stays on the first — “attention residue” — especially if you left it unfinished or expect to rush back to it.
That background load sits in working memory. It is why a day of constant switching leaves you tired even when the actual workload was light.

Close the loop before you switch
- What to do
- Run a “ready-to-resume” note: 60 seconds before you leave a task, write down exactly where you are stopping and what the next concrete action is.
- When
- Before switching between distinct tasks, before an unplanned interruption where you can, and before every scheduled meeting.
- Expected outcome
- The unfinished task is off-loaded from working memory onto paper, so the next block of work gets your full attention instead of a fraction of it.
