The evidence

What the research shows

A stuffy meeting room quietly degrades the decisions made in it. When CO₂ climbs from the outdoor baseline of about 400 ppm to the ~1,000 ppm of a full, closed room, measured decision-making performance drops on most of the scales tested. By ~2,500 ppm — a long, unventilated meeting — scores for taking initiative and thinking strategically fall into the range the researchers labelled “dysfunctional.”

Mechanism

Why it works this way

Your visual system is not built to hold dozens of unrelated objects at once — a cluttered desk or an open floor makes your brain spend effort filtering out what does not matter.

Stale air traps CO₂, which tracks with slower executive function. And unpredictable background speech is the hardest sound to tune out: the brain keeps trying to parse it, breaking focus each time and holding the body in a low-grade state of alert.

What to do
Clear the desk of anything you are not using right now. Get outdoor air moving through the space — a window, a fan, or a walk to reset a closed room. Mask speech with over-ear headphones or a steady, low broadband sound.
When
Set the space up before you start; keep ventilation running through the day; open a window or step outside whenever a room starts to feel close.
Expected outcome
Fewer involuntary attention shifts, CO₂ kept well below the level where decision quality slips, and a lower baseline stress response.
