Your morning workout doesn't cancel out your desk

Two minutes, every 20 to 30. That's the whole rule.

October 28, 2026

@First_Name,

Plenty of desk workers train hard. Gym at 6, then eight hours in a chair. They think the workout covers it.

It doesn't. Long periods of sitting are linked with worse health regardless of how much you exercise. Researchers even have a name for it: the "active couch potato."

The good news is the fix is tiny. In one trial, two minutes of light walking every 20 minutes cut blood sugar after meals by about 24% compared with sitting straight through. Not a workout. A slow lap of the office.

This week's one change: every 20 to 30 minutes, get up and move for a minute or two. Tie it to something that already happens, like the end of a call or hitting send, so you don't have to remember.

Six short breaks beat one long walk for this. Frequency is what does the work.
